Why Data Visualization?

Want your research project to stand out? Looking for ways to engage an audience? Data visualization tools can help you tell your research stories with clarity and interest. This workshop uses basic mapping, word clouds, and spreadsheets to introduce participants to a variety of visualization techniques.

Learning objectives

Participants will be able to do the following by the end of this workshop:

  1. Be aware of why “cleaning” data is necessary & clean it a Google Sheet or Excel Spreadsheet.
  2. Create a Google Sheets visualizations
  3. Find open data online (e.g. City of Seattle, City of Victoria)
  4. Create a Google Map using open data
  5. Create a story based multimedia map using Storymap JS
  6. Create a timeline multimedia narrative using Timeline JS
  7. Create a customized Word Cloud
