Optional Activity: Custom Variables and Embedded Data
This video will help you learn how to set up custom variables in SurveyMonkey
Custom Variables are used to track data about people who complete your survey. In order to access this feature you must be logged into you UVic account (log in with SSO)
- Select Design Survey and then click logic
- Click custom variables and add new by selecting + New custom variable (see screenshot)
- To set up a variable, you must add a variable name (which will go in the Web Link)
- Adding a label is optional but will show in your survey results and will help you during analysis in order to track your variables.
Adding them to Web Link
- Under collect responses
- Select Surveys your way
- Then click Share a survey link
- Copy survey link. Template with custom values should be added at the end of link format. Example https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/your_survey?var1=[var1_value]&var2=[var2_value]&var3=[var3_value].
- In Excel, Numbers, Google Shets etc replace brackets (custom variables) with values you want (be case sensitive). More information and tips can be found on the SurveyMoneky Website.
Advanced Logic Options
In order to eliminate bias and improve your survey, you may also think about using Question Randomization, Block Randomization and Page Randomization. To do this you follow similar steps to the custom variables one. All of these features are changeable once you clikc on logic.
