Which Software is Right for Your Project?

If you’re wondering which software is right for your project, here’s a quick guide to help you decide between QualCoder and NVivo.

Choose QualCoder if…

  • You are working independently: You do not need multiple people coding the same document simultaneously. (Note: The UVic NVivo license does not include real-time collaboration. If you are looking for a free collaborative tool, Taguette is an alternative. Check out UVic Libraries DSC Taguette workshop.)
  • Budget is a priority: You are a student or independent researcher without access to expensive software licenses
  • You value long-term access: You want to ensure you can open and edit your research files in the future, regardless of institutional affiliation
  • Data privacy is critical: Your research requires data to remain offline and stored locally
  • You prefer a simpler workflow: You want a clean, focused interface without unnecessary complexity

Choose NVivo if…

  • You are working with large datasets: For example, analyzing large volumes of social media or web-based data
  • You need advanced analytical tools: Such as matrix queries, clustering, or built-in visualization tools
  • You have access to institutional licensing: UVic offers NVivo at a discounted rate, which is significantly lower than the standard Student and Academic license
  • You prefer structured support: NVivo provides extensive training materials, tutorials, and professional support resources

Where to Start

If you are unsure, starting with QualCoder is often a practical choice. It allows you to focus on developing your coding and analytical approach, and because it supports the REFI-QDA standard, you can later transition to other software if your project requires more advanced features.
