Introduction to QualCoder

  • Pre-workshop activities: 15 min
  • Introductory presentation: 15 min
  • Hands-on activities: 60-75 min

Qualitative data analysis (QDA) software plays an increasingly important role in supporting researchers in organizing, coding, and interpreting complex datasets such as interviews, documents, and images. While many widely used QDA tools offer extensive functionality, they often require costly licenses and institutional access. This can create barriers for students, independent researchers, and those working outside well-resourced environments.

QualCoder presents an alternative approach. As a free and open-source qualitative data analysis software, it provides essential tools for coding and analyzing qualitative data without financial or institutional constraints.

What is QualCoder?

QualCoder is a free, open-source desktop software designed to support qualitative data analysis. It enables researchers to systematically organize and analyze qualitative data through coding, memo-writing, and categorization.

The software supports multiple data types, including text documents (e.g., PDFs, Word files, and plain text) and images. It also allows users to write journal notes and analytical memos, which are essential for documenting interpretations and maintaining reflexivity throughout the research process. For audio and video coding, QualCoder integrates with external software such as VLC media player.

A key feature of QualCoder is its ability to organize codes into hierarchical, tree-like structures. This allows researchers to move from initial descriptive coding toward more abstract thematic categorization, supporting both inductive and deductive analytical approaches.

In addition, QualCoder provides tools for generating reports and visual outputs. Users can produce coding reports, compare coding across different coders, and generate graphical representations of code hierarchies. These features support both analysis and the communication of findings.

Why use QualCoder?

QualCoder offers several advantages that make it a practical and accessible tool for qualitative research:

  • Free and open source
  • Easy to use
  • Offline functionality
  • Works offline
  • Cross-platform compatibility (runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux)
  • Open-source and community driven development
  • Supports for open standards (REFI-QDA Standard)
  • Customizability (allow modifications)
  • AI integration (Version 3.6 and above)

How to get QualCoder?

QualCoder can be downloaded from its official GitHub repository, where both source code and executable files are available.

  • Windows: Download the .exe installer for a straightforward “double-click” setup
  • macOS: Install the latest .dmg or .pkg file
  • You may need to grant permissions in your “Privacy and Security” settings

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Download the software
  • Navigate the QualCoder interface
  • Set up a new project
  • Import and organize qualitative data
  • Apply basic codes to text data
  • Perform simple analytical queries
  • Export coded data or reports
  • Save project files
